Forty-four people, mostly young girls (about thirty two) were killed on their way to school, when the bus carrying them fell into the Narmada canal. Both the driver and the conductor of the bus are reported to be dead. The canal was 60 foot deep and only four children were able to be rescued from the accident.

The bus belonged to the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation. The accident occurred at early hours in the morning at 6:30 am when the driver lost control of the bus when it was on a bridge. Senior officials like Collector and the DSP rushed to the spot soon after the incident occurred.
Most of the children were Class VIII and IX students who were on their way to attend their annual exams.

The rescue operations were hindered as there was plenty of water in the canal and it was hard to locate the bus. In order to aid the rescue operations the water from the Sardar Sarovar Dam was stopped. Officials reported that the bodies had been sent for post-mortem.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, announced that the kin of victims would be provided Rs one lakh as a compensation. A high level inquiry has also been ordered into the incident.
