A total of about 47 people were found dead in various districts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu after drinking illicit liquor. About forty more have been admitted to local city hospitals, some of them have been reported to be in a very serious condition. So far no arrests have been made in this regard in Bangalore. It has been reported that a few vendors have been picked up in Kolar. The police is trying to find out the source of the Alcohol

In order to protest this incident, the local residents blocked the Bangalore-Chennai road demanding immediate action. The road was however unblocked later on. Incidents like these have been happening but this has been the biggest incident in Karnataka in the recent past.

The  JDS - BJP government, banned cheap government liquor and Congress claimed that this action was responsible for the death of several people. Congress claimed that this act would not have happend if the previous government did not impose prohibition. There have been some speculation that this liquor could have been distributed by certain political party (or parties) for elections. The police has been looking into this angle of the case however it does not have any concrete proof yet
