The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) is an outfit which has been requesting for a separate Gorkhaland state in northern West Bengal. This newly formed party also referred as GJMM (Gorkha Jana Mukti Morcha) has its stronghold near the hills of Darjeeling. Mr. Bimal Gurung is currently heading this party. The demand for a new state was on for over fifty years (some claim it to be close to hundred years); however the requests have been intensified only in the past few days.  GJM is an offshoot of Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) which had been demanding for Gorkhaland since 1980s. Bimal Gurang used to be a part of GNLF and quit that party and formed GJM as he was not pleased with the efforts made by GNLF.  The newly formed GJM now has a lot of support at the expense of GNLF.

June 2008 Agitaiton: GJM intensified its agitation in June 2008 when it called for a Bandh (shutdown) in the hill district. The party however tried to show that it is different by providing a 60 hour relaxation period for people to procure essential items. They even allowed the schools, colleges and tea gardens to operate. GJM volunteered to provide food in case of food shortages.

GJM Ranks (as of June 17 2008):
Bimal Gurang- Party President
Roshan Giri - General secretary
Benoy Tamang - Press secretary
