Ahead to the National elections slated to be held in April-May 2009, 5 States were up for polls.Delhi, the fortess of Congress,Madhya Pradesh Rajastan and Chhattisgarh, important states for the BJP,and Mizoram, the strong hold of the MNF went on polls over the last three weeks. The election which was a showdown to the Parlimentary elections were under the shadow of the Mumbai terror attacks. All the national parties were in hoping for a break through ahead of the General Elections in April. The Congress which was under high pressure for poor show in national security matters pulled of dramatic victories in Delhi,Rajastan and Mizoram. The BJP which failed to gain a swing from the recent incidents had managedd to retain Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh handsomely. The loss of BJP in Rajastan put a brake to the party's inexorable dream to regain the National Capital. In Mizoram, the ruling Mizo National Front(MNF) was dislodged from power in a very dismal manner by the Congress who almost made a clean sweep. The BSP led by Mayawati and the CPI(M) won a few seats and showed that their is a swing for an alternate to the UPA and the NDA among the masses.
