Talks between Gujjars and the Rajasthan Government hit another roadblock when Gujjars demanded the release of woman who was arrested during the agitation. Gujjar leader Bainsla said that he is not open to the second round of talks until the jailed women are released. Other preconditions imposed by the Gujjar leader includes releasing of all the people who have been taken into custody by the police since the agitation started. The restoration of cellular phone connectivity as well as electricity and water was also raised by the leader.
The task is cutout for the Rajasthan government in the case of Gujjar reservation. The biggest aspect being that they do not have to power to give any reservations to Gujjars. Even the central government is restricted in this issue by the Supreme Court. Another headache for the Raje government is that, the powerful Meena comunity which is already enjoying the reservations is opposed to the Gujjar reservation. The Meenas are worried that their share of reservations come down if they are forced to share the reservations with Gujjars. The Rajasthan government cannot antagonise the Meenas who have a sizeable number of votes. In fact it is the backing of Meena community which gave the BJP government the political will to deal firmly with the Gujjar agitation. It is interesting to see the devevolopments in the talks going on between The Rajasthan govt and the Gujjars. |
