Jaipur: Eleven people were killed when the police tried to stop a group of angry protesting Gujjar tribesmen in the state of Rajasthan, one policeman also died in this operation. The agitation was stated by the members of the Gujjar community, who have been demanding a Scheduled Caste status for quite some time. The agitation turned violent and the police had to fire at them resulting in eleven deaths.
The agitation started after a group of young protestors tried to block the railroads and disrupt the rail service in the Bharatpur District (Rajasthan). Thousands of members of the Gujjar community stated damaging the railway tracks. There have been incidents of highway blockage and rail road blockage as well. The police had to disperse the crowd on both occasions by using tear gas. The violence however continued and claimed these lives. The ruling BJP government had promised ST status to Gujjars during the elections. This has been opposed by another community called the Meenas who outnumber the Gujjars. Recently an economic package of Rs 252 crore was announced by the BJP government in Rajasthan in order to uplift the condition of the Gujjar community, but this package did not appease the Gujjars enough as they continue to be adamant about the reservation issue. In a similar incident last May twenty three people were killed. |
