Bangalore:Sixty six more people died in one single day due to the consumption of contaminated liquor. This now brings the total death toll to about 156. In addition to that about ninety more were in critical condition wed evening.
Most of the affected members were labourers hailing from the sates Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The liquor was purchased from illegal liquor shops. Buying cheap alcohol sold in plastic pouches is a common practice and incidents like these where people die due to contamination is not uncommon. However this has been one of the biggest such incidents in recent past. Last time an incident like this happend was way back in 1981. Over three hundred people died in that incident. The JDS - BJP government, banned cheap government liquor and Congress claimed that this action was responsible for the death of several people. Congress claimed that this act would not have happend if the previous government did not impose prohibition. Usually during the elctions the government authorized liquor stores are closed and the illegal and unauthorized liquor stores thrive |
