Three people, including a woman, were injured as a dilapidated school building collapsed in Kolkata today afternoon. While two guards of the school, who were injured in the collapse, escaped with minor injuries, the woman's condition is said to be critical.
A major accident was averted as the school was closed for the summer vacations, and no student was present in the school. The incident occurred around 4 pm today afternoon, when portions of Kamala High School in Girish Park area of north-west Kolkata collapsed, and the rubble fell on three people present inside the school building. The rented building, in which a girls' school was run in the mornings, and a boys' school was run in the afternoons, is very old and had been in a shabby condition for a long time. But, neither Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), nor the landlord of the building paid a thought toward renovating the building. The injured are undergoing treatment at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. While the guard's condition is stable, the condition of Ruby Singh, the woman injured in the collapse, is very serious. "Luckily, the summer vacations were going on when the building collapsed. Or else, it could have been a disaster." |
