The five day BSF-BRF talks will start today; this has been a highly underrated news item which can potentially be a very big news item. Every year tens of thousands of Bangladeshi citizens cross the porous border of India-Bangladesh and come to India illegally in lookout for work. In addition to that, smuggling of fake currency, weapons and narcotics is also prevalent. Starting today BSF will discuss with its Bangladeshi counterpart these issues.
The meeting is meant to be a confidence building measure for both sides. The focus of the conference will be the address the common concerns. From the early years of its formation Bangladesh and India shared a very good relation, however recently there have been a few incidents around the border, the most notable being the incidents at Dhubri and Pyrduah, where BDR opened fire on Indian side. Many BSF personals claim Bangladesh to be a bigger threat to India than Pakistan. The 4096 kilometer long India-Bangladesh border has been very difficult to fence because it runs right through the middle of many villages and in several instances the residents of the village have families of both sides of the border. The Indian side is expected to raise the issue about the increasing anti-India elements within Bangladesh. India is also expected to provide Bangladesh with the names of terrorists and other fugitives including a few ULFA operatives. India had earlier provided the details of close to two hundred terrorist camps that have been operating in Bangladesh. India will also request halting of any new development work within 100-120 meters of the international border.
Update :After the first day of the meeting Major General Shakil Ahmed assured India that Bangladeshi soil will not be used by any person or organization for any anti-India activities. He mentioned that any territory can be used by criminals and Bangladesh is no exception and took objection to calling Bangladesh "a hub of terrorism". More is expected to come out of this meeting in the coming few days.
